Wow! Term 1 went by really fast. We had a wonderful time in class. We learned a lot.
We started the term by writing personal narratives. The students picked a memorable moment from their lives and wrote a story about it. Normally I do my writing after we learn about story elements, but it was so much fun to do it at the beginning of the term. This way I was able to learn more about my students and get to know them better. I loved coming to class and looking at the student and think, "Oh! You have a hate the Cannibal ride just like me!"
After we wrote our stories, we read the short novel Anthem. It was fun to see the student's reactions to the book change over the course of reading it. At first they thought it was weird. Even though the story is told in 1st person, the protagonist uses 3rd person pronouns. We had some great discussions about how powerful being an individual is and sticking up for what you believe is right.
My unit for 1st term is one that always changes from year to year. I think it is because there are so many ways to teach story elements. Being able to tell and write a story really sets them up for the other things we do the rest of the year.
Now that 1st term is over, I am excited to get started on my units for 2nd term: Research!
